Trilogy: Award winning artists Soomi Kim (actor) and director Suzi Takahashi’s collaborations began in 2007, when Suzi directed Kim’s Lee/gendary. Their second piece, Dictee: bells fall a peal to sky (Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s Dictee) was featured at the Women Center Stage Festival in 2012. Chang(e) is the third in a trilogy of theatrical creations based on biographies of known and under recognized Asian American figures whose lives were cut short and premiered in NYC at HERE Arts Center in the fall of 2015. Their devised work is gender bending, political, humorous, interdisciplinary and highly physical.
Testing Testing is a new dance theatre work (in progress) that extracts fragments of text, song and sound bytes from recording sessions by famous artists and was developed through the Mabou Mines Artist in Residence Program (2014).
MLCG (My Little China Girl) is a new autobiographical solo work that explores Kim's coming of age in the MTV generation. This dance theatre piece is directed by Leta Tremblay and video designers Kevan Loney & Justin West. MLCG is a Dixon Place commission and will premiere in November, 2017.
Gymnasts: Body Through Which the Dream Flows (work in progress) is a devised ensemble performance comprised of young competitive female gymnasts of diverse backgrounds.Gymnasts celebrates the power of the young female body and the grit, passion and sacrifice that goes into being a competitive gymnast in New York City.
